Do a 15-minute sweep before the tow truck takes the car. Remove the garage-door remote, spare house keys, toll transponder, parking permits, disability placards, insurance card, registration, glovebox papers, and all personal items. Check the console, visors, under seats, seat-back pockets, trunk, and spare-tire well. Factory-reset the infotainment system so Bluetooth pairings, HomeLink, saved contacts, and saved home address are erased. Leave the keys and the signed-over title with the car.
Your pre-pickup checklist
Remove Security Access Items
Start with anything that opens a home, garage, gate, office, or storage unit. Take the garage-door remote from the visor or console. Remove spare house keys, mailbox keys, storage keys, gate fobs, building badges, and neighborhood access cards. Check key rings and cup holders. If a key is only for the donated vehicle, leave it. If it opens anything else, take it with you.
Stop Billable Account Items
Pull the toll transponder from the windshield, console, glovebox, or license-plate frame. Then remove the donated vehicle from the toll account so future charges do not follow the car. Take parking permits, hangtags, campus permits, work permits, and disability placards. These items can be tied to your account, address, workplace, or personal eligibility, so keep them off the tow truck.
Pull All Glovebox Documents
Open the glovebox and remove your insurance card, registration copy, service receipts, warranty papers, roadside cards, repair estimates, and anything with your address, policy number, phone number, or account number. Check the owner’s manual pouch and door pockets too. If you are unsure whether a document is needed for the donation, keep it unless Sunflower Autos specifically asked you to leave it.
Sweep Cabin And Trunk
Work front to back. Check under the seats, between seat cushions, in seat-back pockets, inside the center console, under floor mats, in door pockets, behind visors, and around the cargo area. Open the trunk and look inside bags, bins, side compartments, jack storage, and the spare-tire well. Remove cash, cards, sunglasses, medications, tools, chargers, garage receipts, kids’ items, and personal mail.
Erase Stored Electronic Data
Turn the vehicle on if the battery allows it. Open the infotainment settings and delete Bluetooth pairings, call history, contacts, navigation history, saved destinations, and the saved home address. Clear garage-door programming such as HomeLink. If the menu has a factory reset, use it. Also unplug USB drives, SD cards, phone cables, music devices, and dash-mounted phone accessories.
Remove Optional Add Ons
Take aftermarket items you intend to keep, such as a dash cam, removable GPS unit, upgraded stereo faceplate, child seat, seat covers, floor liners, phone mount, roof-rack accessories, or emergency kit. Keep the car intact and as-described. Do not remove built-in parts, catalytic components, wheels, batteries, or installed equipment that would change the condition you reported unless you tell Sunflower Autos first.
Leave Pickup Items Inside
When the sweep is done, put the vehicle keys with the car where the driver can receive them. Leave the signed-over title with the car as instructed. If the title has a lien, name mismatch, estate issue, or unclear signing instruction, contact the Kansas DMV before altering or signing anything. Do one final walkaround, then lock the car only if you have arranged key access.
Two Items Have Separate Guides
This page is only about removing personal, valuable, billable, and data-linked items before donation. It is not the place to work through state transfer follow-up. For license plates, use our Kansas License Plates After Donation guide. For release of liability, use our Kansas Release of Liability After Donation guide. Keep those tasks separate from the sweep so you do not miss simple things inside the car, like a toll tag, insurance card, home address stored in navigation, or a garage remote clipped to the visor.
Common questions
Should I leave the title in the glovebox?
Leave the signed-over title with the car only if that is the instruction you were given for pickup. Do not leave unrelated paperwork, insurance cards, registration copies, or receipts in the glovebox. If the title has an error, lien, missing owner, or unclear signature area, contact the DMV before signing or handing it over.
What if I forget my toll transponder?
Remove it before pickup if you can. A toll tag can stay billable even after the vehicle leaves your driveway. Also remove the vehicle from your toll account. If the transponder already left with the car, contact the toll agency right away and ask how to close, transfer, or deactivate that device.
Do I have to factory-reset the infotainment system?
Yes, if the system works and you can access the settings. A reset helps remove Bluetooth pairings, saved contacts, call logs, garage-door programming, navigation history, and your saved home address. If the battery is dead or the screen does not work, just remove physical devices such as USB drives, SD cards, cables, and phone mounts.
Can I remove my stereo or dash cam?
You can remove personal aftermarket items you plan to keep, such as a dash cam, removable GPS, child seat, or stereo faceplate. Keep the vehicle intact and consistent with the condition you described. If removing an item would leave exposed wiring, missing built-in equipment, or a changed vehicle condition, tell Sunflower Autos first.
More donation prep guides
A clean sweep protects your privacy and prevents small account problems after the car leaves. Take 15 minutes, remove personal and billable items, erase stored data, and leave only what belongs with the donation: the keys and signed-over title.
